What is USP Class VI?
USP, United States Pharmacopeia, promotes public health by establishing officially recognized standards of quality and authoritative information for the use of medicines and other health care technologies.
In the 1960’s, methodology and requirements were established for plastic materials used by medical device manufacturers. USP testing measures the biological reactivity of plastics that come into contact with mammalian cell cultures and via implantation, into laboratory animals.
Plastics were classified into one of six classes; each required a different level of testing. Class VI testing was designed specifically for medical devices and medical device components and requires the most extensive testing for biocompatibility.
